Cold sore first appears to be minute, firm spots on your lips which then lead to painful blisters. Otherwise known as fever blisters, cold sores are a very common case which is triggered by specific strains of the Herpes virus. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is mostly responsible for causing sores on your lips. Genital herpes on the other hand is primarily caused by the second strain which is the Herpes simplex virus type 2. Generally, both strains are capable of causing either of the mentioned conditions. Unhealthy practices such as sharing of razors, eating utensils, and towels can further spread the infection. The moment you have contracted the virus, you might get overwhelmed thinking that there’s no hope at all. Sharing lipsticks is also unadvisable as this habit can be an effective medium to spread the virus.

A good dentist would say that it a healthy practice to change your toothbrush at least once a month. And if you happen to have a cold sore, it is also a perfect time to buy a new toothbrush for yourself. Furthermore, a new toothbrush is needed after you have completely healed from the infection as the virus may have settled on your toothbrush and can still spread further on. As said earlier, the blisters on your cold sore can be very painful. When the pain gets to you, it is recommended to take some pain relievers like aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen.

If you are fond of eating chips and other salty foods, your lips may not like it as cold sores tend to get irritated further by this kind of foods and will only cause more pain. You also have to refrain from eating acidic foods like citrus fruits as they too can worsen the infection. A cold sore is more likely to occur during the hot summer season. To help you effectively protect your lips from it, lip balms with sunscreens up to 15 or higher come very handy.

One important reminder whenever you have cold sore blister, avoid touching the infected area. Some persons can’t help it and even squeeze the blisters that can only cause worse pain and infection. Upon the initial stage of the infection cold compress with the use of ice packs effectively provide temporary relief. When in agonizing pain and you seem to be out of paracetamols and ibuprofens, milk is a perfect alternative as pain reliever.
