Before prescription medicines came along, the main treatment people had available for heartburn symptoms was herbal remedies for acid reflux. Many people want to use them before they take medications, whether over-the-counter or prescription. . Herbal treatments can be quite effective, especially if your problem with acid reflux and heartburn isn’t too severe.

As with any herbal remedy, it might be good idea to check with your doctor, especially if you’re taking medications for other problems. It helps if your doctor has a particular interest in natural medicine, which is more and more common.

Here are a few commonly recommended herbal Treatments for acid reflux you might want to try.

Although it seems counter-intuitive, apple cider vinegar is very effective for treating acid reflux and heartburn. that may be surprising because vinegar is basically acetic acid and common sense would suggest that adding more acid to an acid problem would aggravate the situation.

We may not know why it’s effective, but I’ve read enough testimonials to think that the must be something to it.

The usual recommendation is 1 or 2 tablespoons of unpasteurized cider vinegar and a glass of water taken three times a day or so. Many proponents of this treatment recommend taking it before meals. Also, some people suggest adding 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

Licorice is another herbal remedy for acid reflux. It has a coating and soothing action. It also seems to stimulate the production of protective mucus.

It’s important that the licorice preparation you take is “deglycyrrhizinated”. The deglycyrrhizinic acid found in raw extract can cause a severe high blood pressure if taken regularly.

People often enjoy taking their herbal supplements as a tea. chamomile tea is one to try for acid reflux. This is a caffeine free herbal tea that many people use for its relaxing properties. It is also good for G.I. problems in general, and acid reflux in particular.

If you’re taking this for acid reflux, it’s best to brew it at double strength and then letting it cool to room temperature. Sip it slowly after meals and I think you’ll find that it will help you quite a bit.

Of course there are many other herbal remedies you can try, some with more evidence behind them than others. If you want to experiment with other herbal treatments for heartburn and GERD a good page to check out is Herbal Remedies for Acid Reflux.

One thing I found out on that page is that a very commonly recommended herbal treatment for acid reflux is likely to do more harm than good. That makes the point that just because a treatment is herbal doesn’t mean it can cause problems.

Another page you may be interested in is: Acid Reflux Home Remedies. You can use these home remedies at the same time as the herbal remedies you may want to try.
